This flowering tree is native to Florida, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. The roots, bark, and leaves of Jamaican dogwood, Piscidia piscipula, were used for fishing, helping tribal hunters tranquilize fish, making it easier to hunt them. Over time the same relaxing compounds were found useful in managing physical and psychological concerns in humans. Teas, tinctures, or small bark pieces were used in wellness preparations to help calm and relax.
The powdered bark is commonly used today to craft herbal tinctures and blends or encapsulated.
